Pressure
When asked about the use of pressure by partners to engage in sexual behaviors, by far the greatest proportion of women reported the use of subtle pressure both as children (63%) and as adolescents (74%). Physical force was next, again for both children (22%) and adolescents (17%). Verbal threats were reported by 14% as children and 7% as adolescents. The use of a weapon was reported by only 3 women as children (1%) and by 11 women as adolescents (2%).
Older Partner
Finkelhor's (1979) definition of an abusive experience (as discussed earlier) was whether the partner was at least 5 years older than the child, thus violating a social norm. This study finds that 63 (23%) of the 278 women reporting sexual experiences as children had partners who were at least 5 years older than they were, and 99 (24%) of the 415 women reporting sexual experiences as adolescents had older partners. These figures are 13% and 20% of the sample of 501 compared to the finding by Finkelhor (1979) that 19% of his sample had partners 5 years or more older.
An analysis of the frequency of older partners by age groups as children reveals a trivial amount of explained variance (Pearson product-moment correlation = .05). An analysis of Black and White women who had older partners shows that 17% of the White sample had an older partner as children, and 5% of the Black sample had an older partner. For adolescents, there were 23% of the White sample who had older partners and 15% of the Black sample. These figures are shown in the chapter on ethnicity in Table 7.5. The results of a hierarchical multiple regression analysis, which shows the long-range correlates of having sexual experiences with older partners as children and adolescents, are presented in chapter 8.
